What is a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner?
As a specialized position within nursing, psychiatric or mental health nursing focuses on providing care for individuals of all ages who are experiencing mental illnesses or distress. In the United States, a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) is an advanced practice registered nurse who is highly trained in providing mental health services in a variety of settings.
PMHNPs are skilled in diagnosing and conducting therapy, and they are authorized to prescribe medications for patients dealing with psychiatric disorders, substance abuse, or medical organic brain disorders. They are licensed to provide emergency psychiatric services, conduct psychosocial and physical assessments of their patients, create personalized treatment plans, and provide compassionate patient care. Additionally, PMHNPs may also act as consultants or educators for families and healthcare staff, offering guidance and support as needed.
